From “Songs of Innocence” by William Blake (Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Fund)

The Necker Cube is a wire-frame drawing that we perceive as a cube in one of two orientations, our perception flipping between interpretations. Named for crystallographer Louis Necker, it reflects what poet and artist William Blake calls the “doors of perception.” It is a symbol of a flexible way of seeing – and of the power of writing to open minds.
